Manchester United Set to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Signing for the WSL Side

The forward, with six months left on her deal, is known as a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee coup for the WSL side.

Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated after she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading forwards. Per reports, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.

Consistent Goal Threat to Boost the Forward Line

The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a major uplift to the team's forward line. Schüller has been highly reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.

  • Over seven consecutive seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United appear to be gathering momentum.

Their recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen further activity:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.

Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”

The new defender, having joined from a side from the American league, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
